黒澤明監督の『乱 』1985年（昭和60年）は、シェイクスピアのリア王を骨格に、戦国武将一文字秀虎を主人公にその晩年と3人の息子との確執、兄弟同士の擾乱を描く。国内外で多くの賞を受賞した。主演は日本を代表するシェイクスピア俳優、仲代達也。
