あの Garden of Eden の Adam と Eve の二人の息子が、Cain と Abel の兄弟です。でも、この兄弟にとんでもない事件が起こります。
さて聖書をじっくり英語で読んだほうが実はいろんなことが見えてきておもしろいし、わかりやすい。どんな解釈ができるでしょうか。
聖書と文学
John Steinbeck, East of Eden
アメリカの文豪、ジョン・スタインベック (John Steinbeck) の名作、エデンの東 (East of Eden, 1952) は、この聖書の物語を下敷きに、壮大なスケールでアメリカ中西部の家族の物語を描きました。
大牧場主 Adam Trask (← Adam) と、二人の息子 Caleb (← Cain) と Aron (← Abel) の愛憎劇。
それを映画化した Elia Kazan 監督の East of Eden エデンの東といえば、やっぱりアメリカン・アイコンであるジェームス・ディーン。
そしてこの映画からあの名曲が生まれました。
